Mother: Now that I have become a woman of a certain age my priorities have changed. Things I did five years ago are things I don’t
do today. The way I look at things and what I say has changed. There is something quite liberating about being older and living life on your terms. Of course, coming from the family of women that I came from I need to be careful when it comes to my mouth. My grandmother and mother both had a way with words. You know those thoughts you have about something or someone that you keep in your head? Well, these things seemed to pop right out of their mouths. I have ask daughter not to let me get by with speaking out of turn, but hey she comes from those genes also so we will have wait to see how this works out.
One thing I do now that I never thought I would do is go to the store with no makeup. Back a few years ago this would have been unheard of. Who might I run into while I am out and about al naturale? As Jodie over at Jodie’s Touch of Style pointed out to me “sunglasses and lipstick go a long way” and she is so right. What is crazy is the reason I stopped wearing makeup every day. The reason was/is mascara. It started because I couldn’t find a mascara that didn’t make my eyes either itch or feel like I had sand in them. Once I found a mascara, I started having issues removing the mascara. It is just easier some days not wear mascara.
Getting up early is another thing I have changed. Now husband feels if you aren’t up at the crack of dawn you are as he says “burning daylight”. Burning daylight is fine with me if I wanted to continue to get up at the butt crack of dawn I would have worked longer. Which this is why I haven’t been to the gym in a few months it started to feel like a job. All of the classes I like to take at the gym start between 8 am, and 9 am. To some, this may sound like a reasonable time, but it doesn’t to me. Back in the day when I was full of vim and vigor I could roll out of bed at 6:30 and be sitting on my spin bike at 7. Those days are so far back I am surprised I remember them. Nowadays due to some stomach issues to be at an 8 am class I have to be up by 6:15 am. It takes me an hour and a half to drink a small cup of coffee brush my teeth and wash my face then get into my workout clothes. It takes me 10 minutes of that time just to get my sports bra on.
In the evenings I like a glass of wine or a cocktail. I don’t say I drink a glass of fine wine because a connoisseur of wine I am not. Give me a cold glass of cheap pink Moscato, and I am a happy girl. But when you work every day and are up at 5:30 every morning and don’t get home until 6 or later having alcohol was not on my to-do list. Now cocktail hour can start any time of the day I want. My window for alcohol is small because I intermittent fast for 16 to 18 hours every day so I don’t eat or drink anything with calories after six most days.
Getting dressed even on the weekends used to be something I did but not anymore. If it is a cold, dreary nasty day as it is a lot of the time in Columbus Oh. in the fall and winter, I stay in my loungewear. Loungewear also is known sometimes as Pj’s. I have been known to get my shower and put on clean jammies and be good for the day. Some days it is good to have a fire, a good book or Netflix and just settle on the couch for as long as I want. Spending a day where I am not productive use to make me feel guilty but those days are long gone.
There are so many things that used to cause me angst, but now they don’t hit my radar. Wearing yoga pants or leggings in public don’t mind if I do. My everyday go-to shoe is now a Keds or a Sketcher I am into comfort and cute. Eating a smaller salad or portion of veggies so I can have dessert is not an everyday occurrence but does happen. As I said on a Facebook page the other day, I am into being happy and won’t do things that cause stress. Living life the way I choose is one of the perks of getting older. And as I have told my friends before “every day on this side of the grass is a good day”.
Until next time.
